December 2018 - #wrapupbury

You can make a positive difference this winter.

From today, we are launching a six-week #wrapupbury appeal to help give vital support to people and families dealing with homelessness in the area and you can help!

In partnership with Red Door, ReBuild, Freedom Church and other local charities, donate a coat, pair of socks, hats, scarves, gloves, sleeping bags or blankets at Mill Gate in the unit next to Thorntons and they will distribute the donations directly to those who need them most.

Donations must either be new or in very good condition and can be received from 10.30am to 2.30pm every day but you can also drop them in at Customer Services outside these hours.

Donations of personal and feminine hygiene products and non-perishable foods such as biscuits, granola bars, tinned foods as well as dog food are also requested.

12 November 2018 - #PurpleTuesday

Purple Tuesday is the first awareness initiative of its kind for shopping centres and retailers to acknowledge how they currently support people with both visible and non-visible disabilities, and how they can assist even further.

According to disability organisation Purple, nearly one in five people in the UK has a disability or impairment and over half of households in the UK have a connection to someone with a disability.

Every Tuesday morning from 9am the centre will host a quiet hour where all music is turned off, enabling those who have autism, to enjoy a more peaceful shopping experience.

September 2018 - World Host

Twenty staff at Bury’s Mill Gate shopping centre are now better equipped to provide excellent customer service to its shoppers.

Mill Gate colleagues have achieved a Level 2 award for customer service in retail, which boosts skills including effective communication and creating great first impressions. Developed for the volunteers and staff of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, the WorldHost Customer Service training has now been tailored for customer-facing security and cleaning teams in retail.

Supporters can attend ten games of their choice during the Sky Bet League Two season at a substantially discounted rate. Flexi Tickets are available for adults, concessions, under 18s, under 16s, under 12s and families.

Mill Gate manager Marie Gribben said: “We are absolutely delighted to partner Bury FC again this year. The Flexi Ticket offers fans a great way to watch Bury play when they want and at a great discounted price. “We wish Bury FC lots of luck for the season. Go the Shakers!”

Bury Football Club Business Development Director, Matt Hanson, said “It’s another great local partnership. We need to be more engaging with the business and wider community and this is the perfect scenario. “Look out for more presence in the town through both the club and the Community Trust as we continue to work hard to interact. Thank you to Marie and her team at the Mill Gate for their support, it’s greatly appreciated.”

July 2018 - One Great Day

Mill Gate’s staff have cleaned, painted, litter picked and dressed up to raise more than £1,590 for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice Grace’s Place in Bury and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity.

The shopping centre ran One Great Day – a family fun day – to finish off a month of fundraising activities. They were joined by the UK’s most famous singing nun, Musical Ruth, who serenaded shoppers on her glittering mobile piano during the day. It was also the celebration of Mill Gate’s 26 year anniversary, so the Bury Times ran a competition to design celebration cup cakes for the shopping centre. Competition winners Daisy Openshaw, age 6, and Leah Hancock, 11, were presented with prize money at the event. Mill Gate staff and retailers dressed up for the occasion, wearing fantastic fancy dress costumes throughout the day.

Shoppers donated change to get their photo taken next to the famous Mutt Cutts car from slapstick comedy Dumb and Dumber.

The stilt walking Liquorice All Sorts Girls were there, meeting shoppers and giving out sweets. There was fundraising facepainting for youngsters too. And there were cupcakes for sale, donated by Mill Gate’s shops.

Centre manager Marie Gribben and her management team raised £1,000 in the run up to the event by ‘going back to the floor’, completing tasks such as cleaning, stocking shelves, litter picking and painting the staff room. Marie said: “We are delighted to be a part of One Great Day again this year. I would like to thank our shoppers for their generosity and our team at Mill Gate for working so hard to raise this money for Grace’s Place and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed dressing up and helping at the event.

The One Great Day initiative is a series of family and community charity events held in shopping centres around the UK in july to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity and locally based children’s charities.
